School Climate Champions Celebration- Manchester Town Hall 9th June

On 9 June 2026, children and young people from 11 schools across Manchester came together for the latest Big School Climate Assembly at Manchester City Council. More than 60 pupils joined teachers, councillors and climate organisations to share ideas about helping Manchester become a greener, cleaner city.

The assembly gave children the chance to showcase the exciting environmental projects taking place in their schools and learn from each other. Students took part in workshops, explored new climate action ideas and discovered how to record and celebrate the skills they develop through environmental activities

Special guests Councillor Mandie Shilton Godwin and Councillor Dave Marsh joined the event, listening to pupils’ ideas and offering advice on how young people can work with local communities and decision-makers to create positive change.

One of the highlights of the day was the Big Climate Marketplace, where children enjoyed hands-on activities with organisations including RHS Nature Parks, Manchester Environmental Education Network (MEEN), City of Trees, SUEZ, Manchester Libraries and The Plastic Shed. Pupils tested their knowledge in quizzes, took part in workshops and even created new products from recycled plastic.

The event included a panel session where children asked climate experts questions about issues that matter to them and their future and share their ideas with environmental leaders.Everyone left feeling inspired and proud of the difference young people are making. All participants became Skills for Life Champions and will continue recording and sharing their environmental achievements throughout the year, helping Manchester become an even better Child Friendly City.

Everyone agreed on the day that, when young people come together to share ideas and take action, they can make a real difference for the future of our planet and for Manchester.
